17) |
To hook the gun for advancing.
At order Gun forward hook, No. 5
and No. 7 go to the limonière and catch with their right hand the left and right
shaft respectively. Then, No. 1 and 2 catch with their two hands the spokes
of the wheels each from his side, and No. 3 and 4 catch the frames near the
trail, each from his side. In this way, they raise the trail up to the waist. At
the order March, the gun sergeant
places himself 6 paces from the trail, and the driver of the wheels horse
attaches the limonière to his horse. The others drives place themselves in
the following order : the carriage and barrel horses behind the gun two paces
from each other, then the ammunition sergeant three paces from them and
finally the ammunition horses in column two paces from each other. When the
limonière passes the line of the axis, No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 attach the gun to
the limonière. Then the driver of the wheels horse approaches the sergeant on
one side, No. 1 and 2 line up to the
right and left of the of the axe, No. 3 and 4 facing the trail, No. 5 and 7 a
quarter pace to the right and left of the lifting handle. |

To unhook the gun for advancing.
At the order Gun unhook, No. 4
returns to the trail and with his right hand pulls the out the strap through
the hole of the pin, and with his right hand the pin itself. Then No. 1 and 2
catch with their two hands the upper spokes of the wheels, each from his
side, No. 3 and 4 put their left hand under the trail lifting handle,
and their right hand under the frame, each from his side. No. 5 and 6 go to
the first pack horse to unload the bags, and No. 7 pull the limonière out.
The driver of the wheels horse brings his horse forward one pace and N. 7
catch the wheels. At
the order On the left right about –
March, the gun sergeant goes from
his place and with all the drivers, turning with his right shoulder in an arc
6 paces across, stops about 25 paces to the right and about 50 paces back
from the gun. The driver of the wheels horse place himself one pace behind
him. The other horses line up in column, with the ammunition horses behind
the gun horses. No. 1 and 2, acting on the wheels, and No. 3 and 4, acting on
the trail, turn the trail to the side of No. 2, then put the trail on the
ground and stand as in § 3. No 6 stops on the right side of the first pack
horse. |

the order March, the gun sergeant
goes 6 paces from the right side of the gun and, aligning himself with the

positions as shown in the picture. |

their horses at a half-left trot behind the flank of the gun as in § 18. The

To load the gun from battle order to advancing
order. At the order Gun
load forward, No. 1 takes the limonière out of its nest and pushes it
into the front part of the carriage, then takes away the cap of the right
trunnion. No. 2 takes out the sight and put it in his leather case, moves the
elevating gear to insert its lower end between the frames, and takes away the
cap of the left trunnion. No. 3 unties the lifting bars, removes the clevis
with the nail from the right wheel, and push the lifting bar halfway up the
barrel’s muzzle. No. 4 removes the clevis with the nail from the left wheel
and hooks the lifting bar to the breech block handle. No. 5 and 6 go to the
wheels horse and together with No. 7 unharness it. The gun drivers unfasten
the straps, with which the loads will be tied to the saddle. At
the order March the gun sergeant
and the drivers line up with the barrel horse two paces in front of the guns
and two paces to its right, the carriage and the wheels horses behind it, two
paces away from each other. The first ammunition horse stops two pace behind
the wheels horse and the second ammunition horse three paces behind the first
one. The gun sergeant stands the right of the barrel horse, facing the
saddle. Then No. 1, 2 and 3 raise the barrel up to the height of their belt,
carry it over the wheels and lift it from the left side of the horse with the
breech part forward. When No. 2 orders Raise
the barrel with the aid of the sergeant put the barrel on the saddle,
binding it with the barrel strap. No.
4 moved the front part of the carriage so that No. 5 and 6 can easily take out
the right and the left wheel respectively, and load them on the saddle of the
wheels horse, leaving only two spokes between the hooks of the saddle. Then
No. 7 with the aid of No. 5 and 6 places the limonière on the wheels, tying
both to the saddle with the front and back straps. Then
No. 1, 2 and 3 raise the carriage to the height of their shoulders and bring
it to the carriage horse. When No. 2 orders Raise the carriage, they put it on the saddle with the help of
No. 4, tying it with the two front and the two rear straps. The
sergeant controls that the carriage and the wheels are properly packed, and
when all the parts of the gun are packed, he stands a pace in front of the
lead horse. The servants take the following places : No. 1 and 2 to the left and
to the right of the barrel horse, No. 3 and 4 to the left and the right of
the carriage horse, No. 5 and 7 to the left and to the right of the wheels
horse, No. 6 to the right of the first ammunition horse. |

the trail to the boxes. Then they do as in § 22. At the order March, the drivers by the shortest

order. At
the order Gun load backwards – March , the servants do as in § 22,
but with the barrel and the carriage carried from the right side of the gun. When
loading, the gun sergeant and No. 4 stand again on the left side of barrel
and carriage horses. Drivers lead their horses as in § 22, but come to the gun,
turning their horses.
After loading, the gun sergeant stands on the right side of the barrel
horse against his neck. |

order. At the order
Gun load backwards, the gun is unhooked as in § 20 and the trail is put
on the ground. The servant do everything else as in § 22. At the order March, the drivers lead their horses
to the same place as in § 24. The loading is done according to § 22. |

To unload gun from loaded advancing order to battle
order. At the order Gun unload forward, No. 1 and 2 with
the aid of No. 3 and 4, from the left side, untie the carriage straps and No.
5, 6 and 7 the wheels straps. At
the order March, the barrel horse turns with its right shoulder forward and
stops 4 paces from the left side of the carriage horse, with its head towards
the boxes. The gun sergeant unties the barrel strap, push the lifting bar
into the gun muzzle and hooks the breech lifting bar onto the breech handle. No.
1, 2 and 3, coming from the left side, together with No. 4, who during unloading
always remains on the right side, raise the carriage over the saddle, carry
it over the left side of the carriage horse and put it on the ground with the
forehead forward, on the left side of the carriage horse. No. 7 takes off the
limonière and carries it behind the wheels horse. No. 5 and 6 remove the
wheels and pull them on the axle, then harness the wheels horse. No. 4 raises
the front part of the carriage until No. 5 and 6 have fixed the wheels. Then
No. 1, 2 and 3 with the aid of the gun sergeant raise the barrel over the
saddle. No. 1 closes the cap on the right trunnion, No. 2 closes the cap on
the left trunnion, puts the sight in its socket, and pulls the elevating
gear down. No. 3 puts the clevis with the nail into the
right end of the axle and ties the lifting bars in their place. No. 4 puts the
clevis with the nail into the left end of the axle. Finally the servants take
place as in § 3. After
unloading their horses, the drivers, except for the barrel and the first ammunition
horse, turn their horses to left and go behind the flank as in § 18. After
the unloading of the barrel and the first ammunition horse, they go to the other horses. |

order. At
the order Gun unload forward, servants
do as in § 26, but, after being unloaded, the carriage turns with the front
part forward. At the order March,
the driver of the barrel horse starts half right and stops his horse four
paces to the right of the carriage horse. After unloading, servants stand as
in § 3 and horses as in § 18. |

as in § 26, turning the trail forward. After being unloading, the carriage

where it is harnessed. Then the servants hook the trail to the limonière as

radius of 3 paces. In this way, the carriage horse is equal to the end of the
gun axis, the barrel horse to the carriage horse bit, ammunition sergeant to
the barrel horse bit, and the first row of the ammunition horses follow the
sergeant, and the remaining rows keep to them the same position as the barrel
horse to the carriage horse. |
